Taking part in HELIUS

By taking part in HELIUS, you are helping to increase the knowledge on the causes of chronic and other diseases. This knowledge is urgently needed so that health care can be improved in the future for you, your children, and your grandchildren. What's more, you will receive a number of personal results from the examination. These results give information about important risk factors for cardiovascular disease, like your blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar level.

Participant meeting gut flora

An online meeting for participants of the HELIUS study took place on Monday 30 May 2022. During this meeting, the physician-researcher Aline Fenneman presented some of the results of the HELIUS research on intestinal flora (bacteria and other organisms that live inside the intestines). For example, it appears that the intestinal flora is different between the different population groups and that the composition of the intestinal flora changes over time. Furthermore, the researchers found that diet and level of exercise influence the composition of the gut flora. The intestinal flora of people who exercise a lot and/or eat a lot of fiber turned out to be more diverse (more diverse = healthier). Additionally, Aline and her colleagues found that gut flora is linked to blood pressure and the thyroid gland. Further research will have to show whether the intestinal flora is the cause of diseases or whether diseases cause changes in the intestinal flora (which came first: the chicken or the egg?).

On Wednesday 25 May 2022, these results were presented in English by the researchers Ulrika Boulund and Rosamel Abeka.
